Dear colleagues,
Welcome back. I hope that you had the opportunity for some down time during the winter break.
We are all saddened by the destructive wildfires in Southern California. Students, staff and faculty from our campus are among the many impacted. Please keep these individuals in your thoughts and provide support as you can. We are grateful for the work of the first responders and hope that the weather provides some relief that will allow them to get the fires under control.
In happier news, congratulations to Hamid Jafarkhani and Jianhua Yu for being named fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Other faculty honors are described below. Later this quarter, in March, the Academic Senate will honor faculty achievements in research, teaching, mentoring and service with the 2024-25 Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Awards. Kyriacos Athanasiou will receive the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award for Research and present a lecture on his work. Professor of Teaching Alessandra Pantano will receive the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching.
The Office of Inclusive Excellence is carrying out a campuswide U.C.I. Experience study to better understand existing programs and provide strategic recommendations for the office. Please read on to learn about recent research, inclusive excellence and student achievements.
I appreciate your ongoing dedication and hard work as we begin the winter quarter.
