Dear colleagues,
The arrival of the new school year offers an opportunity to welcome new and returning students to campus. The students have been through Welcome Week and are now into classes.
This quarter's newsletter celebrates some notable summer achievements. UC Irvine received approval from the UC Board of Regents to create the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health. Also this summer, Qing Nie, Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Mathematics and Developmental and Cell Biology, was selected as the University of California Presidential Chair for the Irvine campus and Christine Gall, Distinguished Professor and Chair, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, was appointed as the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Endowed Chair.
As we close the book on the 2023-24 academic year, there are two noteworthy year-long achievements to report. UCI faculty once again received the most research funding in campus history: $668 million in grants and contracts. Congratulations to everyone on the outstanding work. UC Irvine also had its best fundraising year ever, receiving commitments totaling more than $340 million.
Thank you for your hard work to prepare our campus for the start of the 2024-25 academic year. I wish you all a productive fall quarter.
Hal Stern
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
Distinguished Professor, Department of Statistics
